J.B.’s Journal: Memory Bears

May 10th, 2012

“They tell me their habits, share what they did, their favorite stories, before I start on it, I know a lot about the person like I knew them myself, I almost fell like I lost them.”

Pat Schlau is in the business of creating memories.

“Something special about a teddy bear; hard to put your finger on it, they bring out something in people that a lot of things doesn’t.”

Customers bring in a clothing item from their loved one.

“The reason they wanted this shirt, it brought back memories, every time they went to see him, had this shirt on.”

A sewing machine stands ready, but Pat prefers to stitch by hand.

Pat designs and sews the bears based on the fabric she’s working with.

“Mink is probably most common, a lot of people had mink WOMEN COATS, not used anymore.”

These mink bears were crafted for a Longview woman.

“Until the job is completed, she’s very attached to it,” Raenell Craft, Memory Bear customer said.

The inside of the coat had her mother’s name; which Pat sewed on the bows. She also made the bears an apron from her mother’s dress.

“Pat did a wonderful job incorporating the lining of the stole into the little paws, hands/feet of the bear.”

Raenell displays the bears along with photos of her sisters.

“We were happy when we saw the result, very pleased,” Craft said. “It really is a memory bear.”

Most bears reflect someone’s mother.

“It’s times like this, sitting here sewing these up thinking about what this person did when they were wearing this fur,” Pat said.

Rohan Bumper Liner - Women’s

May 7th, 2012

The Bumper comes in a men’s and women’s specific model, and is designed to transform ‘everyday underwear into specialist padded cycling shorts’. It’s certainly lightweight, at just 38g and I could imagine packing it along in a work bag - for the commute home it might be an option - or wearing it with more casual ‘normal’ clothes for café and errands rides, which might be highly appealing to many female (and male) riders.

Walking about, it was a little on the bulky feeling side, without the contours and folding that come from the supporting outer of a well shaped pair of lycra shorts. On the bike, it soon moulded to shape and became quite comfortable, with a good level of cushioning for casual rides, although I’d not want to chance Rohan’s assertion that ‘it might be a good option, even on a long ride or extended tour’. The problem is that the pad itself stays put quite well, due to the silicone pattern on the underside, sticking nicely to the inside of  WOMEN CASUAL PANTS, but the pants themselves put up far less of a fight than your average pair of liner shorts, meaning that there’s still quite a lot of friction as the whole thing moves under you. This could be solved by wearing super heavy duty undergarments, but that’s probably not the most comfortable option in itself. There was also an awareness of the edges of the pad, which could quite quickly become an irritation.

I can see how this is handy for occasional use, or could be something to keep in a desk drawer (at the risk of being thought incontinent by office mates), but for more regular use, the underwear/pad interface is just not effective enough. Basically, pants just aren’t up to the job!

Fivestory Owner on Renovating a Landmark Townhouse for Retail

May 3rd, 2012

What was it like working with interior Ryan Korban? Did you always see eye-to-eye?
“Before we even put anything to paper, Ryan and I would meet and talk and I would show him amazing things that I have always loved, whether that was a fabric a design or a tuxedo. He really listened to me and created a work and an environment that translated everything I had dreamt for into reality.
”

What was the biggest challenge you faced getting the store ready for opening?
“Besides the physical work of gutting a landmark townhouse and designing a store with such customization and detail, I would say it was the convincing of people and brands that this fantasy thought up by a 24-year-old would actually be realized.”

How did you come up with the concept for the “shoe garden”?
“The character of the building was really special and the sky lit area in the back really needed to be highlighted. When Ryan and I were talking about shoes we realized that shoes needed a intimate and special area devoted to it. Once we decided that that area was perfect for it we really ran w the open air feeling and decided to be a little witty with it.
”

What are some of your favorite pieces on the racks right now?
“All the Lyn Devon dresses with the shorts under them. Risto feathered pants and crop top, and all the men’s Sacai Shop MENS SWEATERS and Visvim shirts!”

What has the response been like so far?
“Good! I think people really appreciate the curation of the product and the uniqueness of the design. I also love to hear that while people find it beautiful, they also say it’s very approachable and comfortable. At the end of the day I don’t only need people to come shop, I’d love people to just come and be inspired and hang out!”

PHX’s Amir’s La Voute is Fashion-Forward Option for Savvy Men

April 26th, 2012

Fashion-forward Amir Saebi is transforming a city flooded with flip-flops and cut-offs into a dapper downtown with the opening of his store Amir’s La Voûte.

Amir’s La Voûte offers a curated collection of menswear for Phoenix’s increasingly vintage-savvy opposite sex. Handpicked items from around the world fill the shelves and, with a selection ranging from vintage bowties and ascots to limited edition Nikes and luxury messenger bags, there is something at a price point for every man.

“I’m really excited about making a change in the fashion sense of Phoenix and about having a spot for guys to not only shop but to hang out,” said Saebi, who celebrated the grand opening of his store on March 8.

When Misty Guerriero of Vintage by Misty noticed a pique in unique fashion pieces for men, she partnered with her friend Saebi to transform a corner of her store near Central and Roosevelt into a fashion hideaway for men.

“[Saebi] brings such a great sense of style for Shop for MEN’S JACKETS, and it was really needed,” Guerriero said. “I literally would have guys walk in at least twice a day asking if I had a men’s section. It’s a great place for that dapper gentleman or even that funky guy — there is something for everyone in there.”

The store is a treasure trove of vintage and limited editionmenswear and on any given day customers can find a suede vintage blazer, a Persian ring, a Burberry watch. With a focus on accessories, the store is almost always stocked with neckwear, suspenders, sunglasses, lapel pins and watches from places around the world like Rome, Paris, Iran and Japan.

Mixed in among the apparel are some rare oddities to decorate your home or office with — like a hand-painted chess set Saebi bought in Paris.

Police looking for 2 men in possible hate crime

April 21st, 2012

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) - Metro police are looking for two men in a battery incident that may be a hate crime.

According to police, back on March 27 two groups of people got into an altercation that turned physical at around 11:30 p.m. at a Las Vegas strip mall.

Two men and a woman were exiting a business when two male adults passed them, allegedly making a remark concerning the sexual orientation of one of the men in the other group.

An argument ensued and ended with one of the men striking a man who was with the woman and other man. The victim fell to the ground and was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

The suspect fled before police arrived.

Police describe the suspect as a black male adult, about 25 years old, 6′0″ and about 160 lbs. He was wearing a light tan or beige long sleeved shirt, blue jeans, dark shoes and a baseball cap that may have been green.

Police are also looking for the man he was with, who is considered a person of interest in the case. He is described as a black male, about 25 years old with medium length hair. He was wearing a red baseball hat, a red and black shirt with horizontal stripes, and either black MEN PANTS ONLINE or blue jeans and dark tennis shoes.

New Yorkers Might Lose An Integral Piece Of Street Art And Hip-Hop History

February 7th, 2012

A group of rappers in puffy jackets and HOODIES FOR MEN OUTLET are being filmed jumping around in unison against a brick canvas of eye-popping red and yellow street art: a giant, leering Jim Carrey as Firemaster Bill winks out at them.

A short distance away, two men admire a portrait of Jam Master Jay – the Run-DMC deejay who was murdered in his studio in 2002 – spray-painted on to the same giant warehouse of a building.

This is 5Pointz.

Even when closed for the winter, this rambling building in Queens – which covers almost an entire city block – attracts scores of graffiti artists, hip-hop stars and tourists. Guide books advise tourists to take the elevated 7 train, which loops around the outdoor exhibition space, bagging them two New York landmarks in one go. Three, if you count the neighbouring contemporary arts centre MoMA PS1.

But this sprawling public graffiti mecca is living on borrowed time. Last March, its owner, Jerry Wolkoff, announced plans to demolish the building to make way for high-rise condos. 5Pointz, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, is unlikely to continue far beyond 2013.

But Wolkoff’s plan, say artists and community activists, will not only destroy an important hip-hop landmark, but the vibrant artistic community of Long Island City – one of the largest in New York – along with it.

By leaving young graffiti artists with nowhere else to go but the streets and the subways, where spray painting is illegal, the artists say, it could well prompt a wave of vandalism.
